Rinjani, Agung, and Senggigi

Day 4: Danau Segara Anak - Plawangan I - Pos III

1200

Gorge near the hotspring Hotspring near Danau Segara Anak campsite The ladies took the morning to wash up at the hotspring while Macih and I waited. The morning was clear but clouds started coming in towards noon time. We left Danau Segara Anak at about noon after finishing lunch. The route leading to Plawangan I started off by skirting around the right side of the lake, and then follow by a not too steep slope up. We took a short break half way.

1430

Hotspring near Danau Segara Anak campsite We were at Plawangan I. The campsite here was quite exposed and without water source. There was a toilet nearby which we gladly made used of. We met quite a number of people at Plawangan I - there were 2 very friendly young men who were university students from Austria, and an Australian couple who were doing Rinjani the second time. The young men from Austria did not have much gear with them, and their plan was just to trek to the crater rim and then return. We offered them some food since all they have were biscuits.

1545

It was rather cloudy at Plawangan I and we waited for more then an hour there hoping to have a clearer sky so that we can have a glimpse of the summit. We were left disappointed, and decided to leave at 1545 for our camp at Pos III. Along the way there were quite a number of deep cracks on the barren volcanic soil which looked like something resulted from earth quakes.

1640

By the time we reached Pos III the campsite was already pretty crowded. There were 3 other parties there beside ourselves - a large group of local Indonesians from Gilli Cawangan Islands, an English couple having their honeymoon, and an American doing a solo trek with his local guide. The space at the campsite were pretty much occupied and we got to improvise by scraping off dirt from a slope to create flat ground for the lady's tent. It was cold in the evening and Lahublair made a fire and all of us including the Indonesians and the English couple crowded around the fire to chitchat and have our dinner.

Day 5: Pos III - Senaru

0735

Left Pos III after taking our breakfast. It was jungle trail all the way from here. On the way we met the 2 Austrains again, and we trekked along and chatted.

0825

Reached Pos II and waited here for the ladies to come down. It started drizzling and we took shelter at the hut. We left at 0850 for Pos I.

1105

Hut at National Park entrance I was officially out of the national park. There is a small hut selling drinks and snacks here, so I bought a bottle of coke and some chocolates and enjoyed myself while waiting for the ladies to come down. There were quite a few locals here preparing to go up. From here it was only a short walk through the village before we reached the Senaru Visitor Center. It took another 15 mins of walk from the Visitor Center to Pondok Senaru.

After cleaning ourselves up, we had our lunch at Pondok Rinjani, the homestay ran by Suma who was our trek agent. The rest of the day was free and easy and we took the opportunity to explore the village. Our dinner was later taken at Pondok Rinjani too.
